5 Unexpected Ways the Human Design System Changed My Life

I’ve been a skeptic my whole life when it comes to anything spiritual—or even remotely self-helpy. If you’d asked me years ago, I would have told you the only real support systems were Western medicine and psychoanalysis. That was it. No woo-woo, no mystical frameworks and definitely no modalities like the Human Design system.
But then, as I grew older and started coming face-to-face with my first glimpses of an existential crisis, something shifted. I became more open to different support systems, different modalities. For the first time, I understood why people need to believe in something greater than themselves.
It’s not like I hadn’t experienced difficulties before—trust me, I’d had plenty. And I worked so hard to grow and become the best version of myself. I did years of psychoanalysis, read philosophy, studied social sciences—you name it. And don’t get me wrong, that journey was incredibly valuable. But something was missing.
I felt like I needed a structure, a system—something that could help me make sense of myself in a deeper way.
And that’s when I stumbled across the Human Design system.
At first, it felt overwhelmingly complex and nuanced, and it took me some time to fully grasp it. But the moment I read the first brief description of my chart, I felt truly seen.
By that point in my journey, I already felt connected to something bigger—the moon, the stars, the energy of the universe. But the Human Design system was the first thing that gave me a tangible framework to understand myself through.
For the first time in my life, I believed in something greater than myself—and that was deeply comforting.
I could go on for days about all the ways the Human Design system has changed my life, but some of the biggest shifts were the ones I never saw coming.
1. I No Longer Hate My Voice
You know that cringe feeling you get when you hear your voice in a playback? Well, my issue with my voice was about a thousand times worse than that.
I hated my voice.
People had been making fun of it my whole life—too soft, too childish, too girly, too this, too that. As a result, I avoided using it as much as possible. Texting over calling. Emails over voice chats. Even when I knew a quick phone call would make my life easier, I just couldn’t do it. I would dodge calls from people I liked. And back when leaving voicemails was a thing? I wouldn’t dare leave one unless I had rehearsed it ten times first.
The irony? I built an entire career in jobs that required me to talk on the phone all day long. And yet, every single time I had to answer a call, I had to pep talk myself into it. Every. Single. Time.
But it wasn’t just that I disliked my voice. I didn’t think it carried any weight.
As an Account Manager, I knew I could persuade my clients in a face-to-face meeting or a video call—but just my voice over the phone? I didn’t trust it. I rarely spoke up in meetings. And when I did, it was only after replaying what I wanted to say a hundred times in my head—usually until the moment passed, and I said nothing at all.
How the Human Design System Helped Me Own My Voice
So you can imagine my surprise when, early in my Human Design journey, I discovered that as a Manifestor, my power lies in my voice.
Not only does a Manifestor’s defined throat center carry weight and authority, but our Strategy is to inform. In other words, a Manifestor’s entire strategy revolves around using their voice—whether it’s saying “excuse me” to open a path or speaking our thoughts into existence.
We are literally here to use our voice. For ourselves. For others. For the world.
I was mind-blown.
At first, I was so deeply conditioned—so stuck in my shadow—that I almost dismissed the entire Human Design system just because I refused to believe that my voice could have power.
But then I decided to test it.
I started small, pushed myself to use my voice more intentionally, and went bigger as I settled into this new reality.
Learning to Love My Voice Again
The result?
I freaking love my voice now.
I use it loud and proud at every opportunity. My preferred way of communicating is now the phone or voice messages. In fact, I’m not ashamed to admit that sometimes I listen back to my own voice messages and think, You go, girl! 😏🔥
I trust my voice now. I believe in its power so much that I’ve even incorporated it into my Human Design offerings.
Interestingly, I started noticing that the more I used my voice, the more people responded to me. Whether it was a simple voice note to a friend or explaining something on a call, my energy landed differently when spoken. And that’s when I realized—my voice doesn’t just carry authority, it carries presence.
Owning My Manifestor Voice in the Real World
Don’t get me wrong—it’s not like I haven’t stopped talking since discovering the Human Design system. A big part of having a defined throat is knowing when to speak and who needs to hear your message. Manifestors aren’t meant to be in constant informing mode—but rather, to understand who needs to be informed of our upcoming actions.
But after years of feeling shamed and ashamed of my voice, I finally feel free.
And that feeling? It’s everything.
2. I Started Honoring My Need for Rest
If you ask the people who know me, they’d tell you I’m a hard worker with unstoppable energy—someone who can go, go, go all the time.
Well, here’s the truth: I am a hard worker, but I do not have unstoppable energy.
As a Manifestor, I’m designed to operate in energetic bursts. When I’m in one of these phases, my output is explosive—I can produce in hours what others might need days to complete. But these bursts are meant to be followed by deep, extended rest. That’s just how my energy works.
Unfortunately, until I discovered the Human Design system, I ignored this truth completely.
Having a deeply conditioned Open Ego center meant that I tied my worth to my ability to constantly do, push, and perform. If I wasn’t busy, I wasn’t valuable. If I wasn’t on, I was failing.
For as long as I can remember, I used to wish I’d get sick just so I’d have a legitimate excuse to rest. Isn’t that sad? And honestly, a little twisted?
And the irony? When I did get sick, I still couldn’t fully rest. Instead, I’d be reorganizing my closet or decluttering my Tupperware drawer—while secretly wishing I’d get just a little sicker so I’d have no choice but to stop.
Looking back, I cringe. But I’m sharing this because I hope my story helps you see yourself differently through the lens of Human Design.
Finally Seeing Myself in My Design
When I had my first Human Design reading, the Manifestor’s need for deep rest was one of the things that hit me the hardest.
It felt like someone had just handed me a permission slip I had needed my whole life.
Of course, I didn’t suddenly shift into hibernation mode overnight. Instead, I started small:
- I delegated tasks to free up my time.
- I asked for help from my support circle.
- I said no to social gatherings when I knew I needed solitude.
It wasn’t easy, and some areas of my life were especially hard to shift—like work and motherhood.
Resting as a Manifestor in My Career
At the time, I was working in a fast-paced startup where my salary was tied to bonuses, competition, and constant performance.
It wasn’t like I could just say, “Hey, I’m in a rest phase this week—catch you all later!”
But I did start embracing my energy shifts instead of forcing myself into constant productivity. I worked harder during my energy bursts and slowed down when I needed to. I even spoke to my manager about having a more flexible schedule, and—surprise—he was totally fine with it.
Eventually, I realized that forcing myself into a 9-5 structure wasn’t sustainable for me, and I started building this business instead—but that’s a story for another time.
Resting as a Manifestor in Motherhood
With my daughter, I’ve learned to be open about my energy shifts.
When I’m in a rest cycle, we lean into calmer activities together—painting, pottery, puzzles, and quiet play. Of course, there are times when my need for rest comes second, and that’s okay, too. But by accepting my energy for what it is, I’m modeling something better for both of us.
Finding Peace Through Rest
Learning to honor my need for rest has been a long, messy, and deeply healing process. But it has also been a journey toward inner peace.
And the funny thing? The more I honored my need for rest, the more productive I actually became. Instead of burning out, I found myself getting more done in less time because I was working in alignment with my natural energy flow.
3. My Perfectionism No Longer Stifles My Creativity
Back in my first year of university, one of my professors asked the class:
“What stifles your creativity?”
Without missing a beat, I answered: “My perfectionism.”
That innate need to know everything about something before I could share it with the world? Exhausting.
That relentless urge to perfect everything before anyone could see it? Suffocating.
It meant that I often gave up on ideas I actually loved, simply because I felt I wasn’t good enough yet. When someone would compliment me—“Wow, you know so much about this!”—I’d immediately shut it down with, “Oh no, I barely know anything.”
It wasn’t that I wasn’t learning, exploring, experimenting—I was. But my perfectionism robbed me of the joy of sharing my journey with the world.
How the Human Design System Helped Me Break Free
Discovering the Human Design system coincided with a huge turning point in my life.
I had recently taken on a mentor/coach role at work, guiding a sales team. And I had also just become a mother—which, let’s be honest, is like being a mentor, a coach, a driver, a cook, and a cleaner all at once.
When I found out that as a 1/3 Profile, I’m literally designed to experiment, make mistakes, embrace curiosity, and share my journey with others—something clicked.
I finally saw my trial-and-error process not as a flaw, but as my strength.
Instead of obsessing over getting things perfect before sharing them, I started embracing the process itself.
- At work, I encouraged my team to try different selling techniques and experiment—without fearing failure.
- I modeled this behavior by initiating projects and openly admitting when something didn’t work.
- As a mother, I stopped shielding my daughter from mistakes and instead let her see mine—teaching her that failure is part of growth.
This mindset shift changed everything.
Instead of seeing every abandoned project as a failure, I suddenly saw them as priceless lessons.
From “Failed Blog” to Business Success
One of the biggest realizations came when I reflected on my travel blog.
I poured so much time, effort, and love into my travel blog—only to eventually abandon it when life pulled me in a different direction. For a long time, I saw that as a failure.
But when I finally let go of perfectionism, I realized:
That blog wasn’t a failure—it was my education.
Everything I learned—SEO, content writing, branding, audience building, monetization—became the exact skills that helped me build my Human Design business at lightning speed.
It was never wasted time. It was an investment in future me.
Letting Go of Perfectionism = True Freedom
Not only do I feel like a better role model for the people in my life, but I also feel wiser, empowered, and stronger.
Because when you stop seeing mistakes as failures, and start seeing them as stepping stones—suddenly, everything becomes an opportunity.
And that is what true creative freedom feels like.
4. I Tamed My Shopping Addiction by Using My Authority
Understanding your Authority and learning how to trust it is arguably one of the most powerful tools the Human Design system offers. But honestly? I never imagined that my Emotional Authority would be the thing that finally broke my shopping addiction.
For years, I made purchases based purely on impulse, logic, or urgency:
- It’s on a crazy sale—I can’t miss this deal!
- The sale ends tonight—I have to decide NOW!
- This just makes logical sense—it’s practical, so I should buy it.
- Omg, I’m SO excited about this right now—I need it!
I never slowed down enough to ask myself if I actually wanted these things.
How the Human Design System Changed the Way I Buy
When I first learned about my Emotional Authority, I decided to test it out—and shopping seemed like the easiest place to start.
I set one simple rule:
If it wasn’t a necessity, I had to sleep on it before buying.
Sometimes, I needed to wait even longer. The goal wasn’t forcing myself to be overly cautious—it was just making sure that when I did buy something, I was mostly certain about my decision.
And you know what happened?
I lost count of how many times my initial enthusiasm completely faded just a few hours later.
That item I had to have? Suddenly, I didn’t care about it anymore. The thing that felt urgent? Not so urgent the next morning.
Tuning into my Emotional Authority completely transformed my shopping habits.
More Than Just Saving Money
This shift wasn’t just about spending less money—although my finances definitely improved.
It also made me a more conscious buyer:
- I stopped spending money on big, unethical brands just because they had a flashy discount.
- I discovered small, ethical, local brands that I feel thrilled to support.I stopped filling my home with clutter and started making space for things that actually feel good and have meaning.
But the biggest change?
I learned to trust myself.
Instead of constantly being influenced by external pressure—sales tactics, trends, or other people’s opinions—I started making decisions in a way that actually works for me.
And that? That is priceless.
5. I Stopped Planning Everything
Before I discovered the Human Design system, I fully identified as a Type A person.
I would obsessively plan my days down to the minute. Every meal, every snack, every hour was accounted for. I made unreasonable to-do lists and expected myself to check off every single thing.
But here’s the thing—I kept failing at being a Type A person.
I failed hard.
You don’t want to know how many planners, bullet journals, and scheduling apps I’ve purchased over the years, convinced that this one would finally help me get my life “under control.”
I kept thinking I just wasn’t disciplined enough. I kept pushing myself harder, convinced that if I just tried more, planned better, and stuck to the structure, I’d finally get it right.
Then, I had my first Human Design reading.
The words that kept coming up? Freedom and flexibility.
That’s when I realized: I was never meant to function that way.
How the Human Design System Showed Me Why Strict Planning Doesn’t Work
When I started learning about my Human Design system, everything finally made sense.
I had spent my entire life forcing myself into a system I was never meant to operate in. No matter how many planners, schedules, or productivity hacks I tried, I always felt like I was failing.
Once I understood my Human Design, I realized why strict planning never worked for me.
My Energy Works Differently
I have a Triple Split Definition, which means I process information best when I move between different people, spaces, and experiences.
Trying to keep myself locked into a rigid, repetitive schedule? That was completely against my natural flow.
As a Manifestor, my energy comes in powerful bursts, followed by deep rest cycles. I had been forcing myself into a Generator-style routine, which works for people with consistent energy output—but not for someone like me, who thrives on inspiration-fueled waves.
The Pressure of Planning Was Making It Worse
My Open Root Center meant I was constantly amplifying external pressure, always feeling like I had to rush or prove myself.
Planning my days down to the minute wasn’t actually helping—it was just another way I was trying to control this pressure instead of learning to release it.
And because I have an Open Sacral, I’m not built for constant doing. I work best in cycles, not in a non-stop state of action. But rigid planning left no space for this natural rhythm.
I Needed Freedom and Flexibility
I also have the Channel of Openness (12-22), which means I need to honor my moods. Some days, I feel social, excited, and creative. Other days, I need solitude and quiet. A rigid plan doesn’t allow for that kind of flexibility.
Then, there’s my Emotional Authority—I need time to feel into decisions. But strict scheduling doesn’t give me the space I need to process emotions and make aligned choices.
And my 1/3 Profile? It means I learn through trial and error. Following a pre-set structure didn’t allow me to experiment, explore, or pivot—which is exactly how I thrive.
How I Work Now (And Why It’s Actually More Effective)
Once I understood my Human Design system, I stopped forcing myself into hour-by-hour schedules that made me feel like I was constantly falling behind.
Instead, I started working with my energy instead of against it—and for the first time, things finally started to flow.
Instead of trying to control every detail of my day, I started:
Allowing for flexibility—I have a general idea of my tasks, but I leave room for flow and spontaneity.
Prioritizing based on energy—I do my deep work during my Manifestor energy bursts and rest when I need to.
- Ditching the “perfect planner” fantasy—I use simple lists and calendars, but no longer expect myself to be perfectly structured.
- Listening to my mood and emotions—If I don’t feel like working on something, I trust that it’s not the right time for it.
- Embracing experimentation—If something isn’t working, I shift. I pivot. I try something new.
And you know what?
Not only do I feel so much lighter, but I’m actually getting more done.
Final Thoughts on the Human Design System
If Human Design has taught me anything, it’s that the most unexpected shifts can often be the most life-changing.
I didn’t expect to love my voice after years of hating it.
I didn’t expect to finally stop feeling guilty about resting.
I didn’t expect to break free from perfectionism and impulse buying.
I didn’t expect to find peace in letting go of rigid planning.
But here’s what I now know:
When you start living in alignment with who you actually are, everything begins to flow.
So if you’re feeling stuck, frustrated, or like things just aren’t working—maybe the answer isn’t to push harder.
Maybe it’s time to redefine success on your terms.
